A tiny, rented, former garage in downtown Raleigh served us well for our first two years in business, but now we have a larger and more permanent spot to call our own.

What was an empty backyard apartment is now a colorful classroom inspired by classic summer camps and the woods just beyond the deck.

Adult Night 3/25 - Floral Resin Workshop

Spring is coming — and Creative Camps is celebrating our new woodsy studio with a special collaboration with nature artist Chelsea of Chezley Designs.

In this hands-on class, you’ll create your own pair of floral earrings and/or a pendant — a wearable “forever flower” preserved in crystal-clear resin.

Along the way, you’ll learn the foundations of epoxy art: the right materials, mixing and pouring techniques, working with dried botanicals, and finishing your piece professionally. These core skills translate to future projects like coasters, trays, night lights, and more.

Skip the hours of research and trial-and-error and benefit from Chelsea’s expertise. You’ll leave with a beautiful handmade piece — and the knowledge and confidence to keep creating long after the workshop ends.

We have moved out of our Forest Park studio and are revamping a space 10 minutes southwest (exact address provided upon registration). Many fun, “classic camp cabin” touches are still to come, but here’s a sneak peak of a corner so far - featuring a fresh coat of Cactus Green + Megan’s family’s vintage camping stools.

What do I need to do to register?

1. Submit the form at the link.

2. Send your payment via Venmo (@creativecamps). Contact us if you need to pay a different way (we also accept cash, check, and card).

What discounts are available during the Early Bird period?

1. 2025 rates:

   $200 for half-day camp and $375 for full day. Will increase to $210/$395 on 2/15.

2. Bring-a-friend discount: $15 for half-day camp; $25 for full day

3. Sibling discount: always applies! $15 off for additional siblings for half day ($25 full day). Cannot be combined with friend discount.

How do I take advantage of the discounts?

1. Total your amount due for the registration(s) you submitted. The price for each camp is shown on the form; it will adjust to 2026 rates on 2/15.

2. During the Early Bird period ONLY, if a new family registers and mentions you sent them, we will refund you ($15 - $25 based on the week). If a friend referred YOU during this period, please write their name for “How did you hear about us?” and apply the discount when you pay. Limit one friend discount per family. Cannot be combined with sibling discount.

3. If you are enrolling more than one sibling for the same camp, subtract

   1. $15 per additional sibling (for a week of half-day camp)

   2. Or $25 per additional sibling (for a week of full-day camp).

   3. Cannot be combined with friend discount.

4. Send your Venmo with your camper’s name(s) and camp week(s) in memo. We’ll double check and be sure to let you know if anything is off!

Where will camp be held?

The exact address of our new studio will show when you submit your registration, but there is a map on the form showing its location. It is approximately 6 minutes southwest of Dix Park. Camps with 10 or fewer students will be held here; camps with over 10 sign-ups will move to Edenton Street United Methodist Church (228 W Edenton Street, Raleigh NC 27603). We like to snail-mail a fun orientation letter about two weeks before camp starts, and we will confirm the finalized location with you then.

What if our plans change?

• Receive a full refund if you cancel at least one month before camp starts

• 50% refund up to two weeks before the start.

Who will be running camp?

Our camps are co-taught by founders and friends, Alder Keene and Megan O’Connor Upchurch. One or both of us will be on site for 100% of camp. This summer we are also plan to hire a studio assistant, so stay tuned on our Instagram for updates.

Megan is a professional artist with a BA in Art and English from the College of William & Mary and an MA in Museum Studies from Marist College’s Florence, Italy branch campus. With 10+ years of experience as an educator in informal learning environments, she has run camps around the country, including for the Museum of the Gulf Coast in Texas, Henricus Historical Park in Virginia, and Dix Park, Pullen Arts Center, and Cary Arts Center in the NC Triangle.

Alder is an artist, educator, and A+ teaching fellow with A+ Schools of NC. With over 10 years of teaching experience in both public and charter schools, Alder has worked with hundreds of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Alder holds a BFA in Painting and a Masters in Art Education from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She currently is a visual arts teacher at Research Triangle High School in Durham.

What if not enough campers sign up?

We need at least five students to run a camp. If the camp you signed up for does not reach the minimum, we will begin to advise a month in advance and make a final call by two weeks in advance, issuing a full refund if the camp cannot run. To help prevent this, please share this post far and wide ☺️

While most of our camps are half-day, two weeks have morning and afternoon sessions. Campers attending both can stay 9am - 4pm. Please note that students must be at least rising third graders to attend full-day camp.

And while the camp themes vary, you may notice they all have something core in common: good old-fashioned making things with our hands. We’re pretty analog when it comes to summer camp - experimenting with tactile materials, honing fine motor (and inter-personal) skills, and connecting through creativity are some of the big ideas here.

June 15-19, 9am-12pm: Intro to Fiber Arts & Sewing (Grades K-5)

Get swept up in a colorful flurry of fibers and fabrics! This week, campers will squish and swirl wool to make a bright felt treasure bowl. Then, they’ll learn about stitching and sewing to create tiny stuffed friends and fun embroidered designs. Curious makers can find new crafty sparks, bringing their awesome fiber-art ideas to life.

June 22-26, 9am-12pm: Intermediate Sewing: Stitch & Style (Grades: 3-8)

Inspired by global textile traditions, students in Intermediate Sewing will stitch an embroidered design on their own canvas tote. They will also learn visible mending techniques to add their own unique touches to clothing. With extended time to focus on in-depth projects, this camp is perfect for middle-grade makers ready to take their basic sewing skills to the next level. Pair it with Jewelry & Wearable Art for a full Fashion Week experience!

June 22-26, 1-4pm: Jewelry and Wearable Art (Grades 3-8)

Do your kids love expressing themselves through their own personal style? Art doesn’t always have to hang on the wall. This camp is all about making art and jewelry they can wear! Think artsy bandanas, sewn shoulder bags, decorative pins, and patterned jewelry. This camp is for those who love standing out and adding personal flair to any ensemble.

July 6-10, 9am-12pm: 3D and Recycled Art (Grades K-5)

Young makers will enjoy a hands-on “clay day,” assemble their own folk-art memory jugs using tiny found objects, and transform recycled materials into imaginative 3D creations. We’ll also spend time outdoors celebrating the elements of design as found in the beauty of nature, with ephemeral art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. Perfect for elementary artists who love to experiment and get their hands messy.

July 13-17, 9am-12pm: Mini Worlds: Detailed Diorama Design (Grades 1-8)

Step inside a world of creativity! Kids will research, design, and construct their own miniature habitat—whether it’s a rainforest, coral reef, pet shop, or scene from a favorite book. Campers will learn drawing, painting, cutting, and sculpting skills as they explore new materials each day. At the end of the week, they’ll bring home a detailed diorama showcasing their work and imagination.

July 13-17, 1-4pm: Puppet Studio (Grades 3-8)

Have a student who wants to bring their own characters to life? From constructing 3D papier-mâché puppets to designing intricate shadow puppets, this camp will allow them to advance their puppet-making skills. We will learn about NC-based Paperhand Puppet artists Donovan Zimmerman and Jeghetto. Be prepared to get messy practicing techniques such as armature building, papier-mâché, painting, and garment construction with fabric. We can’t wait to watch stories begin to form as characters come alive!

August 3-7, 9am-12pm: 3D Art & Sculpture (Grades 3-8)

Middle-grade artists will problem-solve and discover new sparks as they experiment with materials, structure, and design. Campers will enjoy a “clay day,” curate and arrange small objects for a folk-art sculpture, and learn to design and mount their own wire figures. This camp combines open-ended process art with finished pieces they’ll be proud to take home at the end of the week.

Every camp is led by professional teaching artists Megan Upchurch and/or Alder Keene; bolstered by high-quality materials; and includes time outdoors so kids can stretch, explore, and genuinely grow. We’re thrilled to share that camps of up to 10 students will take place in our soon-to-be new studio home—a welcoming “modern cabin” that functions as a completely independent creative space. Although attached to a residence, the studio is fully separated from the main living area and has its own private entrances, restroom, full kitchen, and deck. The property sits on a wooded acre lot just six minutes southwest of Pullen Park and Dix Park. We will be transforming it this spring into a creative headquarters, but here is a sneak peek:

If/when a camp exceeds 10 sign-ups, we will again rent a classroom at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in downtown Raleigh.

Big news: the Creative Camps studio is moving to a wonderful new home this winter. I’ll share more details later, but in the meantime, we’re hosting a final open-studio in our current space tomorrow.

We have exciting news today. It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you - the Creative Camps Studio!

The Building

This 326 square foot gem was originally a detached garage, built in the 1920s and nestled in the beautiful Forest Park neighborhood of downtown Raleigh.

It was later converted by architects from NC State’s Design School into a tiny apartment with a full bathroom and kitchenette.

This month I transformed it into what you see now--a fully equipped “craft shack” classroom, filled with the natural light from 7 windows and 3 skylights.

A Creative Headquarters

With its relaunch as a dedicated studio space, my teaching artist friend Alder and I will be able to host cozy art classes for up to 8 students. Featured on our calendar:

• We have a full slate of summer camps for grades K-12, now open for registration!

• “Adult Nights” - feel free to contact us to request one for your group. Our official launch party for Adult Nights is July 1 and I will send a separate email about that.

At Creative Camps, we are all about the analog and the throwback, so this project is the perfect fit for our inaugural how-to post.

The beauty of patches is that they can be applied to almost anything—denim jackets, backpacks, hats, or even framed as miniature works of art.

How to Make Your Own Embroidered Patches

Feeling inspired? Making your own embroidered patches is easier than you might think! Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get you started:

What You’ll Need:

• Pen

• Scissors

• Fabric (felt, canvas, or twill work best). Pictured: 4x4” felt sheets

• 3” embroidery hoop & needle

• Thread

• Peel n stick adhesive (if you want a no-sew application)

  

Steps:

1. Sketch Your Design – Draw a simple design on your fabric. Keep it small and bold for visibility.

   

2. Secure it to the Hoop – if using one.

   

3. Prepare the Thread – Cut a length a couple of feet long, double-knot one end, and poke the other through your needle.

   

4. Embroider the Design – Use basic embroidery stitches like satin stitch or backstitch to bring your patch to life.

   

5. Remove from Hoop and Cut Out the Patch – Leave a small border around your design for a clean, finished look.

   

6. Apply an Adhesive Backing – Trace the patch onto the Peel n Stick paper. Trim the shape from the paper, peel one side and adhere it to the back of your patch. Alternative: sew or safety pin the patch to the desired location.

In the mornings we’ll bring back crowd favorites from our most popular camp of 2024 (Folk Arts), like embroidery and beading - and introduce new projects from around the world such as mosaic memory pots, mini sculptures, and other eclectic and functional pieces. Afternoons will emulate a week in a lakeside bunkhouse, combining a modern spin on classic craft shack projects (elevated macaroni art, embroidered badge-making) with all-American nostalgia: think team-building games, theme days, a tie-dye bar, relays, and general “scoutcore.”

  • Sewing + Color Lovers Camp - Half OR Full Day. Dive into the world of fiber arts and color this summer! This crafty camp is perfect for students who love to experiment. In the mornings we’ll learn how to stitch cute stuffies, dye fabric with batik techniques, and sew personalized pillows. This camp will give students the tools and inspiration to bring fiber arts projects to life. In the afternoons we’ll be inspired by the quirky collages of Henri Matisse, psychedelic floral patterns of the 1960s and 70s, and the bold lettering of today’s graphic artists. Campers will learn about color theory, principles of design, and explore various media such as embroidery, paper-cutting, watercolor, and acrylics.

• July 28 - August 1, 2025

This camp is designed for students who get excited about exploring nature and want to learn how to develop colorful landscapes. In the mornings we’ll go on walking field trips outside for sketch sessions exploring mediums such as gouache, watercolor, and pen & ink in a sketchbook. In the afternoon sessions we’ll build techniques in acrylic to fully express dynamic terrain using our sketches as inspiration. A strong focus will be on color theory and you’ll develop skills in mixing and applying colors to create mood, atmosphere and a sense of harmony. PM is recommended for older campers (age 10+).
